Pictures and Video

So, Cammie and I have been looking at camcorders (ok, so it's more me than her - I'm a geek, I can't help it), and I've been researching what I REALLY want to get. I mean if I'm going to drop a couple/few hundred - I want to make sure I'm getting what I want... Or maybe get something better than I 'want' for future compatibility, right?

So the first thing I came across was the Panasonic ag-hmc40. I LOVE this thing, but at almost $2000.00... I'm sorry - can't even think about it (yes I can)... So when I start getting a little more realistic, I came across the Canon HF20 and HF200... I think this is where I'm going to head. It's 1080p resolution (1900x1200ish) and it's flash memory based, so I can add space as I see fit... I'll let you know where we (I) head.

The real reason I wanted to write something today though was this - I was thinking about our kid - I call him "him" just because I don't know, if he's a she - this is the first of many mistakes I'll make as a father, I assure you. I just wanted to clear that up as you see what I type or hear what I say...

I was thinking about our kid and how I want to get so many moments on tape, and got to thinking about other things, like how our kids won't know what 'my' dad's voice sounded like. Or the mannerisms that he used when he talked and how I wished I had thought of getting him on tape earlier.

At the funeral, I remember mom complaining (in a good way) about how dad would always try to lean out of the picture... And it was true, half of the pictures he would try to get as far away as possible. This gives a false impression to those who might not have known him. He was quite sociable, he would join in on almost any conversation (slowly at first, he never really jumped in before knowing what was being said, and who was saying what), and he could talk about most topics... Yet in the pictures he almost seems like a hermit...   So for those of you out there, who generally try to put on a show, or to avoid the cameras like my dad did. Stop - because after your gone, it's those that never met you that will want to know what you were really like, and how you acted, to see if they somehow resemble you... Pictures and video may be the best things we have. Just act normal.

So I think I'm going to try to put together small interviews of family... Ask questions about other members of the family. Ask questions about experiences... To build a profile of people by putting together information from other people, and what they remember... This has the potential to be a HUGE task, but I think it could be fun. I just hope people don't mind being on tape. (at least I plan on doing this as soon as I get my video recorder)

Besides the baby, I think Grandma will be the first - 93ish years, there may be a lot to record.

Take care!

Church, take note... We can work with science!

So I was reading http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=newborns-may-start-honing-their-mot-2009-11-05 ...
I started thinking - THIS is why Christians need to understand science AND the Bible. If Christians can make educated arguments such as "Abortion is bad" .. "Why?" .. "Because we're killing humans." ... "Oh, no, they're not 'alive' until they're born." ... "Really, why is that?" ... "Well, they have to be self sustaining." ... "Really? Well what if I put a two year old in the middle of a field and leave him there?" ... "Uhhh...."

I think it's GREAT when science (biology/medicine) makes the arguments that Christians are looking for. For example:
(From Dorland's Medical Dictionary)
life (līf) the aggregate of vital phenomena; the quality or principle by which living things are distinguished from inorganic matter, as manifested by such phenomena as metabolism, growth, reproduction, adaptation, etc. dorland()

To me, this covers just about any conception (pun not intended, but I'm leaving it because I find it funny now) one can think of in regards to a baby's development while in the womb. I'm pretty sure at the first couple splits of cells that, yep, it's organic!

So back to the original link - So this means there is scientific evidence suggesting that baby's are learning to communicate before being born... The more "human" we can make babies to those who are OK with "disposing of them", the better off I believe we are.

It really is interesting to me how people argue in regards to religion and science... But this is coming from someone who is "open" to any interpretation of the written Word. Not because I'm willing to just accept whatever I'm told, but because I believe it's possible that I've missed one thing or that I completely misunderstand something. Not to mention the fact that I haven't talked to God face to face and figured out what he meant by "...Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David...". Was the David a descendant of a Lion, really? OK, so I think I know the answer to that one, but those are the questions I ask all the time in regards to the Bible... Not because I don't trust "it", but because I don't trust "me" and the way I understand a concept... And - no offence, but I don't trust your understanding of the concept either - especially when - just because that's the way you've always understood it.

One of the issues I've had is the 7 day creation theory... Now, any time that someone says "billions and billions of years" Christians just "turn off", right? Why is that? If we look to Genesys 1...

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

3Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

4God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.

Can someone tell me how long the first 4 verses took? ... Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you that this was IN FACT billions and billions of years... But is there a reason why it couldn't have been? And where was this point of view from? Was this from the earth? Or was this from some other vantage point (another universe perhaps?) So the whole "light" thing is subjective... I look at the night sky and "see" many galaxies that cannot be seen. They are dark from this far away...

Please  understand that I believe that God set the laws of the universe, so understanding science - is in effect understanding God... And by sticking our heads in the sand when there is "proof" of something counter to what we believe and not trying to understand it better, means (to me) that we're too busy to appreciate what God has given us.

Well, past 2am... probably time to go to bed! This is why I don't post more... Can't stop thinking.

Good night all!

What is going on?!?

So you might be thinking, is the world coming to an end? Is the sky falling? Why is jay writing xanga entries again?

Well, as some of you have guessed - and as others of you KNOW... I'm stuck in an airport again. OK, so Chicago is this monster of an airport hub, right? The thing is, if you look at the layout of their runways (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&q=ord+&ie=UTF8&ll=41.982208,-87.888908&spn=0.112803,0.233459&z=12&om=1) you'll see a bunch of intersecting lines, yes those lines are the runways that have planes dodging each other like crazy... No, it's really not like that - BUT the layout of this airport DOES make for some pretty difficult ATC (air traffic control) monitoring.

Today as the ice fell south of ORD (Ohare) for some reason flight as canceled, and canceled and canceled... I originally had a flight that had OVER 25 seats open... After it was canceled in between two other canceled flights also going to Grand Rapids - surprisingly everyone else that missed the flights they were supposed to be on also wanted the flight I chose as a backup. As I don't pay - this makes me last on that VERY LONG list... Ahh well... So is life.

To waste time - I write. Now, honestly - to waste time I normally watch TV. I know I watch way too much TV, but there are so many good show on (mostly at the same time - with junk on the rest of the time, go figure?). So sometimes it's good that I get stuck somewhere without a TV. But you know, thanks to the internet, TV now available to those who only have online connectivity and no TV. There are some good shows (burn notice on usa.com, journeyman on nbc.com, heros on nbc.com, life on nbc.com ... etc...) that I've caught up on ONLY because of the internet... Amazing.

So why am I saying all of this? Well... because it's midnight (my time) and I'm going to be skipping half a day of work tomorrow because I can't help it - and I have to do something. So now that I've made everyone's day by giving them something to read, I'm going to go see what's on the internet!

Have a great night everyone!
Take care!
